Visa Information for Travel to India

Foreign nationals, including Lithuanian citizens, are required to obtain a valid visa before travelling to India. A visa is an official travel authorization granted by an Indian Mission, permitting entry into India for a specified purpose and period. Please note that visa validity begins from the date of issue, not from the intended date of travel. Approval of a visa application does not guarantee issuance of a visa.

General Document Requirements:

  • Printed and signed copy of the online visa application form:

  • Passport:  Must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of travel and contain a minimum of two blank pages. Visa cannot be issued beyond the expiry date of the passport.
  • Photograph:  One recent colour photo (5 x 5 cm, white background, front view) pasted on the application form.
  • Proof of confirmed stay in India
  • Proof of availability of sufficient funds
  • Flight bookings (in some cases return flight booking as well)
  • For non-Lithuanian nationals:   A valid residence permit or other official documentation confirming legal stay in Lithuania.
  • Additional Requirements for Minors:
  • Written parental consent in English.
  • Proof of relationship to the minor.
  • Copies of both parents' passports.

Note: The Embassy may request further documentation as necessary. Applicants must submit documents in the format prescribed by the Embassy.

Visa Categories & Specific Requirements

    • Medical or Medical Attendant Visa

    • Medical Visa is meant for those foreigners whose sole objective of visit to India is to seek medical treatment in established/recognised/specialised Hospital/Treatment Centres in India for serious ailments.
    • Medical Attendant Visa is granted to the attendant / family members of the patient coming to India for medical treatment. This visa is co-terminus with Medical Visa of the patient.
    • A maximum of two persons (Attendant and family members of the patient) are allowed to apply for this visa. The applicant is required to produce a letter from established / recognised / specialised Hospital / Treatment Centres in India confirming that assistance is required by the patient on Medical Visa with the Medical Attendant’s name included in the said letter.
    • Medical invitation letter from the hospital
    • Copies of medical reports / documents regarding treatment
    • Documents establishing adequate financial standing for expenditure on treatment and travel in India

    • Employment Visa

    • Required documents:
    • Employment contract (in English).
    • Invitation from Indian employer.
    • Certificate of incorporation of employing company.
    • Biometric enrolment is mandatory.
    • Additional documents may be requested.
    • The original employment contract of the applicant (in English). This should be stamped and signed by the Indian company (this document will be retained at the Embassy)
    • The contract should show a minimum salary of INR 16.25/- lakh per annum; however, this condition of annual floor limit on income will not apply to: (a) Ethnic cooks, (b) Language teachers (other than English language teachers) / translators and (c) Staff working for the concerned Embassy/High Commission in India
    • For NGOs-Honorarium upto a ceiling of Rs.10,000/- per month is applicable/eligible
    • The ‘Certificate of incorporation’ of the Indian company or ‘Registration Certificate’ of the NGO.
    • For foreign nationals engaged as teaching faculty at the lever of Assistant Professors and above the minimum salary limit is INR 9.10 lakh per annum.
    • The ‘Employment visa proforma’ filled in English.
    • An undertaking written on the company letterhead (in English) from the Indian company stating that no Indian national has the skills/expertise required nor is eligible for the job that you are being hired for. This letter will have to be in original, stamped and signed.
    • Undertaking written on the company letterhead (in English) as per the standard model ‘Income tax payment undertaking’ in original, stamped and signed. Salary must be mentioned in this document.
    • The applicant’s CV (in English).
    • Photocopies of diplomas or professional certificates justifying the applicant’s expertise in the proposed field of work in English. All foreign diplomas will need to be translated to English.
    • Declaration for to be filled by applicants when submitting an application.
    • Registration with FRRO/FRO is required within 14 days of arrival for the continuous stay of more than 180 days.

    • Project Visa

    • Letter from the Indian company awarding the contract to the foreign company specifying:
      • Name and registered address of the foreign company
      • Name of the project awarded as per the tender document
      • Location of the project in India (village/town/district/state)
      • Duration of the contract (Number of days)
      • Total number of workers likely to be send by the foreign company -category wise
        • Highly skilled
        • Skilled - technicians with Diploma/Polytechnic degree
        • Skilled workers with school level education
    • Certificate of incorporation of the company in India
    • Letter from the Indian company addressed to the Indian Embassy explicitly stating that it guarantees the conduct of the foreign company and the foreign personnel involved in the execution of the project/contract, responsible to ensure the applicant will abide by Indian rules and regulations and will be liable to ensure departure of the applicant from India upon expiry of visa.
    • Letter from the foreign employer providing brief description of the project in India and of the job which the applicant is required to perform in India.
    • Documentary proof of educational qualifications or professional expertise (with English translation).

    • Business Visa

    • Hard copies of:
    • A guarantee letter from the sending company specifying visa duration and financial responsibility.
    • A personal invitation from the receiving company in India.
    • Proof of applicant’s financial standing and documentation in support of intended business visit to India.
    • The invitation letter from India should be in original with seal and signature, letter should specify the details like Name, Nationality, Passport Number with the purpose of visit, duration of visa and number of entries.

    Note: Both the guarantee and invitation letters are required, even if both entities belong to the same corporate group.

    • Student and Research Visa

    • Submission of subject of research along with the application.
    • Students need to register within 14 days of entering India with the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO).
    • Details of places to be visited in India during the project period.
    • Original letter of admission and Certificate of Affiliation in original from the recognised Indian University/Institution.
    • Evidence of financial resources to meet the expenses to meet the stay in India.
    • In case the research proposal relates to the applicant’s own country a brief synopsis (150 words) and justification for doing research in India should also be submitted alongwith the application.

    • Intern Visa

    • Invitation letter from the organisation/agency based in India sponsoring the foreign national for the internship programme and clearly indicating the period of internship along with payments to be made.
    • A letter from the concerned institute in Lithuania.
    • For students, going for community and social services, letter from their institutions and letter of financial guarantee either from parents or Bank.
    • Proof of registration of the organisation in India.
    • In case the internship is in a Company, the foreign national being sponsored for internship should draw a minimum remuneration of Rs. 7.80 lakhs per annum. There will be no minimum salary limit in the case of internship in Educational institution and NGOs.
    • Registration with FRRO/FRO is required within 14 days of arrival for the continuous stay of more than 180 days.

    • Entry Visa

    • Entry Visa is granted to foreign nationals of Indian origin and their dependent family members including spouse and children.
    • Surrender Certificate (mandatory only for Indian origin foreign nationals)
    • Birth Certificate showing names of both parents (Lithuanian Birth Certificate should be accompanied by a self-declaration about authenticity of the certificate; - Indian/third country birth certificate to be attested by MEA/Embassy of third country before submission)
    • Indian Passport copies of Indian origin parents.
    • Copy of Lithuanian Passport and Cancelled Indian Passport/Surrender Certificate of both the parents (if parents are no longer Indian citizens)
    •  Marriage Certificate for applications on spousal basis

    • Conference Visa

    • Invitation letter from conference organizers.
    • Clearance letters from India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).The organisers of the conference are required to obtain prior clearances from Ministry concerned of the Central/State governments, the Central Ministries of Home and External Affairs. These approvals are to be conveyed to the Embassy and to the applicants who should include them with their applications.

    • Film Visa

    • Issued to cast and crew of international productions and co-productions approved for filming in India.

    • Detailed itinerary / complete address of shooting locations
    • Letter from Film Production Company/organization for issue of Visa mentioning the name of the applicant along with an undertaking that they would take the responsibility for the cast and crew coming to India for filming

    • Required:
    • Copy of flight tickets confirming onward travel.
    • Valid for a maximum of 15 days; allows a stay of up to 72 hours.
    • Biometric enrolment is mandatory.

    • Electronic Visa (e-Visa)

    • Payment must be made online using a credit/debit card.
    • Apply at least 4 days before the intended travel date.
    • Decision will be communicated via email.
    • e-Visas are processed in India and can only be applied for twice per calendar year.

    • The decision will be emailed after processing in India.
    • India currently allows e-Visa holders to enter the country through the following 32 international airports and 6 seaports:
      • International Airports: Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bagdogra, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi, Gaya, Goa (Dabolim), Goa (Mopa), Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kannur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Port Blair, Pune, Surat, Thiruvananthapuram, Trichy, Varanasi, and Visakhapatnam.
      • Seaports: Chennai, Cochin, Goa, Mangalore, Mumbai, and Port Blair. 
    • Restricted Area Permit
    • Some regions (e.g., Sikkim, Andaman Islands) require an additional permit. The Indian Embassy can issue this for a maximum of 14 days.
    • The application form and additional details are available on the Embassy website. Permits of longer duration may be obtainable directly in India.
    • Visa Validity and Fees
    • The Embassy determines the visa's duration and number of entries.
    • Payment must be made via bank transfer. A printed receipt including all transaction details (applicant's name, amount, purpose, date) must accompany the application.
